Jailhouse Lawyers Speak (JLS) stands as the largest prisoner-led organization advocating for human rights and dignity within the U.S. prison system. Known for its unwavering commitment to abolition, JLS has a strong legacy of organizing and mobilizing major resistance efforts—including the 2017 Historical Millions for Prisoners Human Rights March, the 2018 Nationwide Prison Strike, and the 2021 Shut ‘Em Down Demonstrations.
With members across the country, JLS fights for better conditions within U.S. prisons and expands access to legal education for imprisoned humans. Through the distribution of law books, courses, and literature, JLS empowers prisoners to educate themselves and support the liberation of others.
JLS welcomes new members in both men's and women's prisons across the U.S., fostering collective resistance that bridges the inside and outside. Community-driven projects led from within continue to forge paths toward abolition, sustaining the struggle for justice and freedom.
